Vice President of Membership
I have been married to my husband Dan for twenty-five years and we have three wonderful children. A twenty-two year old named Citlali who is attending Roger State University and working at a law firm. An eight-teen year old son Thomas who is a Junior at Tulsa Community College and our sixteen year old named Xochitl who is a sophomore attending SIHS in Broken Arrow public schools. All our family is bilingual in English and Spanish. We love to travel to exotic places, serve and meet new people.
I have been a PTA volunteer for more eighteen years. Most of these years have been at the local level. I have been a homeroom mom, reflections chair, teacher appreciation chair, council alternate delegate, council delegate and Vice-President of membership. I am the founder, President and currently the vice-President of ICE (International Cultural Education) Community PTA. On the state level, I have had the privilege to be the Oklahoma PTA Diversity Chair, Membership Chair and currently the Vice-President of Membership.
PTA is relevant to me because I believe in the mission statement:
“To speak on behalf of children and youth in the school, in the school, in the community, and before governmental agencies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children”. I love this statement! What is more important in this world than the children? The children are our hope and the future leaders of this country. We need to make sure they receive the best education our school s system can offer and everyone of them is ready for college. This is a reason that I stay involved. I will do for my children but also for the ones that do not have a voice. I am a huge advocate for minority groups that feel disconnected from education because the lack of understanding the terminology, language, cultural or because they do not know their rights. This is where PTA comes in place, we have the tools to connect with parents and share with them the power a membership card and to teach them to advocate for the children and their education.
What is your favorite type of food and why?
Because we travel a lot I enjoy all kind of foods, but my favorite type besides Mexican food is Chinese food. I like this type of food because of its seafood and all of the different spices that are used. It also has many different choices of meats and vegetables to taste.
